2 Cups all-purpose flour
3 Teaspoons baking powder
1/2 Teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 to 7/8 cup milk
Preheat Oven 400 degrees.
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the shortening, cutting it into the flour with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture had small rice-sized granules.
Add the milk and mix well with a fork or your fingers. The dough should be rather soft but not too sticky.
Turn the dough out onto a floured board or pastry cloth, kneading it about 12-15 times by hand. Then roll or press the dough out until it is about 3/8 to 3/4 inches thick. Cut out the biscuits with a biscuit cutter dipped in flour (I use a glass) then put each biscuits onto a greased baking sheet or pan.
NOTE: After kneading the dough, you can also just pinch off a piece of biscuit dough about 1" in diameter, roll it in the palm of your hand, then shape it into a round biscuit and place in the greased pan for cooking.
I prefer this way. You can make different sizes and shapes for the kids. They love them!
Brush the tops of the biscuits in the pan, with melted butter. Bake in a very hot oven (400 degrees) for 10-15 minutes, depending on the thickness and size , until they are golden brown.
Serve immediately with butter, honey, jelly, syrup, cheese, anything you like.
I love hot biscuits with milk gravey for breakfast on a Sunday morning!
Yield 12-15 medium-sized biscuits
